In the last few weeks, airlines have grounded hundreds of planes, thousands of flights have been cancelled and countless passengers have been stranded, frustrated, angered or otherwise inconvenienced at airports across America.

For both airlines, passengers and yes, even the federal agency charged with enforcing safety and maintenance policies, it was the perfect storm.

To make matters worse, three airlines declared bankruptcy and ceased operations, and a fourth—Frontier—just filed Chapter 11 (but for the moment is still flying).

And with airlines cutting capacity in the coming months (and raising fares), the situation only looks like it’s going to get worse.

So, what can you do to avoid being a travel victim?

The key is information flow—and having a Plan C and D. (Plans A and B are not going to work…trust me.)
