Tips from a pro who travels 400,000 miles a year
In the last few weeks, airlines have grounded hundreds of planes, thousands of flights have been cancelled and countless passengers have been stranded, frustrated, angered or otherwise inconvenienced at airports across America.
For both airlines, passengers and yes, even the federal agency charged with enforcing safety and maintenance policies, it was the perfect storm.
To make matters worse, three airlines declared bankruptcy and ceased operations, and a fourth—Frontier—just filed Chapter 11 (but for the moment is still flying).
And with airlines cutting capacity in the coming months (and raising fares), the situation only looks like it’s going to get worse.
So, what can you do to avoid being a travel victim?
The key is information flow—and having a Plan C and D. (Plans A and B are not going to work…trust me.)

Interesting that taking a train or bus should be included as the last suggestion to avoiding airline/airport mess. This should have been the first suggestion. I can offer one more way to avoid the malaise: Don't go. Stay home and improve your landscaping. Host a block party. How much flying is really necessary anyway? Do you seriously have to attend Aunt Millie and Uncle Leo's 50th Anniversary in Topeka?
