Its proximity to Zimbabwe made its currency vulnerable and the Rand took a beating against the U.S. dollar in 2008, dropping dramatically by 50%. Prices have been reduced drastically at luxury hotels in Capetown and Johannesburg and Stellenbosch wine country.
