While New Zealanders are the “first” to see the New Year’s sunrise, their Aussie neighbours and fond rivals throw the first great party. A splendid fireworks display lights up icons like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House at midnight. The best way to watch is to rent a boat with friends and watch from the middle of the harbour, or book a table at one of the city’s finest top-floor restaurants, such as Level Forty-One.
