Versailles isn't what it used to be: after years of costly, labor-intensive renovations, it's getting more beautiful all the time. Situated on more than 1,300 verdant acres, Versailles is a testament to the excess and opulence of the French royalty, with more than 700 rooms and 2,000 windows. Versailles dazzles inside and out with features like the Apollo Fountain (above), one of the first fountains built on the grounds. Built under Louis XIII and expanded upon by three subsequent kings, the palace renovation work continues under a 22-year plan that includes a restoration of the chateau's façade, as well as the rebuilding of a 10-foot gilded fence that, in Louis XVI's day, barred access to the inner courtyards.
