Inter-Continental Berchtesgaden

Don’t let all the natural woods and stone of this five-star mountain getaway fool you: This was the site of Hitler’s Alpine aerie, known as Eagle’s Nest. Today, it is the site of a posh 135-room hotel and spa that opened in 2005 and has been universally lauded ever since because of its sensitive appraisal of the past—thanks in part to the close proximity of the Dokumentation Obersalzberg, a museum that details the role of the region from 1933 to 1945. The hotel, of course, features the expected appointments and amenities all with spectacular panoramas of the surrounding countryside, but its sober location makes for equally solemn contemplation
