Costa Rica’s original rainforest lodge is suitably remote: Visitors must take a morning-long trip in a covered tractor to reach the isolated site, which is set deep in the forest. But it’s worth the trek. Once at Rara Avis, you can swim beneath sparkling jungle waterfalls, view the rarest of birds and explore the wildlife with world-class nature guides. The main lodge offers rustic rooms with basic accommodations; but the River Edge Cabin, a ten-minute walk away, is tranquility nonpareil, with its private bath (including hot water), solar-electric lighting and a shared balcony with hammocks.
