Ryokan, Japan

One of the world's classic traditional lodging styles is the Japanese ryokan. Managers of ryokan know that even adventurous travelers who want to enjoy this most traditional of Japanese experiences may be intimidated by the rigorous formalities and codes of behavior that are required in such hushed and elegantly austere surroundings. Luckily, many have banded together to form The Ryokan Collection, a group of 30-plus luxurious lodgings located throughout the country (there are five in Kyoto) that promise Western-friendly touches and English-speaking staff that can guide you through the rituals. One gorgeous example is the Ryokan Seiryusou in the hot spring town of Shimoda.
