5 Lakes Lodge, Maine

Moose-watching should be a given at any Maine resort, but 5 Lakes Lodge adds hundreds of miles of hiking trails with astounding views of northern Maine’s grandest lakes and Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak in the state. The five-room lodge, situated on a peninsula that juts into South Twin Lake, is adjacent to the largest expanse of wilderness east of the Mississippi River. Guests can cast their flies into the lakes, choose from nearby rivers or, in the winter,  drill a hole in the ice for ice fishing. The beautiful exposed spruce Great Room makes for a stunning view of the fall foliage from behind the two-story bay window.
