A traditional restaurant with a formal -- but absolutely not stuffy -- atmosphere and very professional service, Ciro a Santa Brigida is one of the most famous, and most typical, Neapolitan restaurants around. The restaurant was opened in 1932 by the father of the current owner/managers at Via Foria, and transferred here by his children. Since then, Santa Brigida has become a gastronomical institution, serving cuisine in a warm atmosphere laden with traditional decor. Popular with locals for its
fritto (deep-fried dishes including meat cutlets and seafood), and for side dishes like hard-to-find traditional vegetables, it also serves good pizza and excellent desserts. Of the traditional Neapolitan specialties on hand, try
rigatoni ricotta e polpettine (pasta with ricotta and baby meatballs) and
polpi alla Luciana (squid cooked in a pocket with tomato and herbs). Counted among the restaurant's famous and faithful customers were the writers Pirandello, the artist De Filippo, and the actors Gassman and Totò.
