Many Amsterdammers consider Sama Sebo the city's best Indonesian restaurant, which means the place is often packed with locals. Its 23-plate
rijsttafel sets a standard others try to match, and environs are very Indonesian, with rush mats and
batik. Some items are hot and spicy, but in general, the memorable effect comes from effectively blending spices and sauces rather than adding rocket fuel. You can make your own mini-
rijsttafel by selecting from the a la carte menu, or take one big menu dish, like the superb
nasi goreng or
bami goreng. When you order either of the two lunch specials, you get a heaping mound of food. The restaurant has two sections: the main dining room with its Indonesian motif and the bar area for more casual dining. If the restaurant's busy (it often is) you can either think of the quarters as convivial or cramped. A sidewalk terrace is equally area-challenged.
