My South End dining experts had never brought their sophisticated palates here before I asked them to meet me, but they were clamoring to return before we even finished our appetizers. I'm not sure how they missed this longtime neighborhood favorite -- originally (and often still) called Bob the Chef's, the business originated in the late '50s and has been here since 1968 -- but my compatriots agreed that it's well worth a trip off the beaten tourist track. Bob's serves generous portions of delicious Southern specialties against a backdrop of colorful art and jazz. The music is live Thursday through Saturday beginning at 7:30pm and at the Sunday buffet brunch. The menu includes homey dishes such as fried chicken, served alone or with barbecued ribs; meatloaf; liver and onions; and \"soul fish\" (in cornmeal batter), as well as Creole jambalaya and shrimp étouffée. Dinners come with a corn muffin and your choice of two scrumptious sides -- including black-eyed peas, creamy macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and candied yams -- and vegetarians have several options. For dessert, try the amazing sweet-potato pie, which makes pumpkin pie taste like vanilla pudding.
