If you are spending only 1 day in Franschhoek, make sure you lunch here: Book a table on the all-weather veranda, order the signature deboned smoked salmon trout served with a creamy horseradish sauce, and allow plenty of time to drink in both the view and one of the farm's great wines. Even the locals can't resist dining here -- situated on the Franschhoek Pass with a breathtaking view of the entire valley, this family-owned and -managed restaurant has arguably the best setting in South Africa. The food is refreshingly simple -- if the trout doesn't appeal, try the Patagonian-style calamari or the Mediterranean-style lamb. End with La Petite Ferme's own plums, poached in red wine and served with meringues and ice cream.
