The most popular independent restaurant on Grand Cayman's East End, the Portofino Wreckview draws clients from the hotel and resort complexes nearby. In 1962 the American cargo ship
Liberty sank during a storm on a reef off Grand Cayman's eastern shore. Today, split into three thoroughly rusted separate sections that rest in shallow water, it provides a focal point for panoramas that open before you from the restaurant terrace. You might begin a meal here with a satay of beef or chicken, served with a cucumber-and-peanut sauce, then follow with a savory version of
zuppa di pesce (fish soup); breaded conch steak served in traditional East End style; turtle steak; any of several kinds of pasta; shrimp
fra diavolo; and the house specialty, baked seafood Portofino, which delectably combines lobster, tiger shrimp, scallops, and mousseline potatoes au gratin. Lunches focus on salads, sandwiches, pastas, and grilled fish.
