On one of London's most gay-friendly streets, Old Compton Street, Balans is the city's best-known gay restaurant and has been since its inauguration in 1993. Some diehard fans take all their meals here. Its extensive hours of service are almost without equal in London. Although the food is deemed "British," it is an eclectic cuisine, borrowing freely from whatever kitchen the chef chooses, from the Far East to America. For starters, try the smoked duck salad with quail eggs or pan-seared scallops with a cauliflower cheese gratin. Main dish temptations include pumpkin ravioli in a shallot and truffle sauce or swordfish steak with black bean rice and a lime and coriander salsa. Rump of lamb is a tasty dish flavored with garlic and rosemary. Balans has a party pub atmosphere and is a good place to meet people.
