For more than half a century, Café des Amis has been entertaining theater-goers with the two-fisted drinks at its bar and fine Gallic cuisine in its restaurant. With service by French waiters and sophisticated Continental decor, it brings a touch of Paris to the heart of London. Dishes are both traditional and modern, but with reduced calories since the days of Escoffier. The wine list from France, is one of the best in Covent Garden. The cafe is a good choice for a pre- or post-theater meal, or a romantic dinner even if you're not attending a play or musical. The menu is not completely conventional. There are modern touches as well, such as soupe au chocolat with black-pepper ice cream. You might begin with French onion soup or shellfish bisque, perhaps seared scallops with chorizo and roasted hazelnuts. Among the mains we've savored are roasted sea bass in a vinaigrette with palourd clams, and pot-roasted lamb flavored with cinnamon and cloves. Desserts are more English than French, such as poached Yorkshire rhubarb flavored with ginger and served with a cream custard.
