Right on the corner of Sloane Square in the heart of Chelsea, this brasserie has long been a favorite of shoppers hitting the boutiques along King's Road. The upstairs is in the French-brasserie style, rather classic with large mirrors and high ceilings. The atmosphere downstairs is more informal, and there are a few sidewalk tables for those who want to check out the Chelsea scene. If you arrive early for coffee and newspaper reading, you could mistake Oriel for a Parisian cafe. The food is fine but not excellent, including such brasserie standards as tuna Niçoise or steak and pommes frites. Other dishes include steak au poivre with a very peppery sauce, or perhaps a traditional béarnaise. Mussels marinara is another classic dish, and the salads are always freshly tossed. The vegetarian won't go hungry here either.
