Now in its third decade, the Donzoko is one of Madrid's longest established Japanese eating spots. Its location on lively Echegaray street makes it particularly popular with party-going groups of young clientele, as does the monumental menu, which covers every everything from sushi to sukiyaki (veal strips with wok-cooked vegetables for two; often viewed by Madrileños as a Nipponese version of their cocido). Sashimi and prawn tempura also grace the list, and of course sake (rice wine) is the appropriate drink for the occasion. Decor is functional to weird -- you're greeted by a metal water fountain on the small entrance patio -- and the service is attentively cool.
