One of your most memorable experiences in this region could be a meal at this romantic restaurant at the water's edge in Varenna's oldest section. Dining is in a beautiful stone-floored room with white stone walls or on a terrace on the water. The kitchen makes the most of local herbs and vegetables and, of course, the bounty of the lake -- for starters, quadrucci (pasta pockets) are stuffed with trout, and one of the best of the many risottos combines wild mushrooms and lavarello (a white fish from the lake). Grilled lake trout stuffed with mountain herbs is a sublime main course, though many other kinds of lake fish are also available.
