A relaxed, relatively informal hideaway from the congestion of Munich, this restaurant is housed in a building dating from 1724, which was once a private villa belonging to a pair of artists. Some of the original castle-like design remains, though the structure has been expanded and renovated over the years. Several brews, all products of Augustiner (the famous brewery), are offered, including both the pale and dark versions fermented from wheat
(Weissebier). Menu items include roasted shoulder of pork
(Schweinsschulterbraten) basted with (what else?) beer and served with braised red cabbage, and potato dumplings; beef braised in red wine
(Böfflamott) with bread dumplings
(Semmelknödel); and a dish beloved by Franz Josef, the last of Austria's Habsburg emperors, a savory form of boiled beef with horseradish
(gesottener Tafelspitz mit frischen Kren).
