Long before the Holocaust, a thriving Jewish community existed in Munich. Cohen's brings back a good prewar memory of pre-Hitler days. Its wine comes all the way from Israel, and the dishes offered here would make many a transplanted New Yorker feel at home. Portions are large and the food, evocative of its Mittel Europa heritage, is authentically heavy. It's a bagel-and-lox kind of place, with such standard favorites as gefilte fish (in this case doused with Golan wine), along with boiled beef with mushroom gravy and chopped chicken liver. Expect legendary knishes and borscht like your mother made, assuming she was Jewish. On Fridays, there is live music.
