The building was constructed in 1864, and there's been a restaurant with a mostly gay, or at least arts-oriented, clientele since its very debut. In the 1970s, Fassbinder, the noteworthy film director, hung out here a lot, usually dressed entirely in chains and leather. Late in the 1990s, the place was renovated into a less evocative, more streamlined-looking beer hall, still with a healthy percentage of gay clients, and with direct access to a 26-room hotel and one of the busiest gay saunas in Munich. Accommodations in the hotel are relatively affordable at 102€ ($122) for a double. Each room has a TV and telephone and an all-white, efficient-looking collection of furnishings. But we recommend the place as a restaurant and bar hangout. Simple beer-hall-style food includes chili with French bread, vegetarian strudel, roasted pork with potato dumplings, pork schnitzel with french fries, Wiener schnitzel, and grilled turkey steak with fresh mushrooms.
