We are cross with the Clover Grill. Once a place where the irreverent menu ("We're here to serve people and make them feel prettier than they are") competed with the even more outrageous staff for smart-aleck behavior, it has lost its luster. The menu has fewer jokes, and the once charmingly sassy staff is straying lately toward surly. But the burgers are still juicy and perfect and apparently are still cooked under a hubcap (they say it seals in the juices). It seems to work well enough -- it's a mighty fine burger. Breakfast is still served round-the-clock, and drag queens still hang out at the tables or counters. But too many times we've come in at night requesting a shake, only to be told "no shakes." Unacceptable for a 24-hour diner. Go -- but tell them they are on probation until they reclaim their original joie de vivre.
