This is an old-style steakhouse with prices more manageable than the Manhattan superstars (and Brooklyn's Peter Luger), and it's one stop on the no. 7 train into Queens. On a recent occasion, two of us had drinks, appetizers, filet mignon with portobello mushroom in Madeira wine reduction, coffee, and dessert for around $150. The ambience is casual; the waitstaff will remember you after one visit as well as your drink of choice. The rooms are handsome and wood-paneled, with a fireplace in the back room and stained glass in some of the windows. The meats (steaks, chops, rack of lamb) range from $28 on up to $85 for the chateaubriand (for two). There are also seafood and chicken entrees. There's an affordable sandwich and pasta menu (until 5pm, or after if they know you) that runs from around $9 for burgers to $15-ish for the higher-end pastas. You can also make a good-value meal from the appetizers, salads and soups. Executive chef Francisco \"Paco\" Gonzalez often kibitzes at the bar, where a local crowd gathers.
