One of the earliest businesses to open in the now-burgeoning Alamo Heights neighborhood, Cappy's is set in an unusual broken-brick structure dating back to the late 1930s. The main dining area is a cheerful place with lots of windows, high ceilings, hanging plants, and colorful work by local artists. There's also a patio shaded by trees. The smell of a wood-burning grill (not mesquite, but the milder live oak) foreshadows some of the house specialties: the peppercorn-crusted prime tenderloin or the slow-roasted Italian chicken with porcini mushrooms. Lighter fare includes honey-glazed salmon on polenta with sautéed spinach. A chef's prix fixe lets you choose an appetizer, salad, and entree. Visit Cappyccino's, an offshoot of Cappy's down the block with a great by-the-glass wine list and a more casual Southwest menu.
