One of the few constants in this ever-changing town is the long line that invariably forms outside Baoluo every evening. A seemingly tiny diner occupying a mere unit in a row of tightly packed Chinese houses until you step inside, the restaurant actually stretches four houses deep, every square inch buzzing with barely controlled chaos. The story goes that Baoluo's owner -- a bicycle repairman who lived in this very lane -- started the restaurant in his own home but gradually bought up his neighbors' houses as business boomed. The extensive menu features many local favorites given a slight twist, including
huiguo rou jiabing (twice-cooked lamb wrapped in pancakes),
songshu luyu (sweet-and-sour fried fish),
xiefen hui zhenjun (braised mushroom with crabmeat), and the sinfully fatty but absolutely delicious
hong shaorou (braised pork belly).
