Located in the Yu Yuan commercial complex but slightly away from its jam-packed center, this restaurant dating to 1910 serves traditional vegetarian food (lots of imitation meat and stewed foods made of tofu and soy products), noodles, and dumplings at reasonable prices. More "formal" dining on the second floor (open at 11am) offers signature dishes (some of which have wall photo displays) such as
caixin xiehuangyou ("crab" actually made of carrot, mushroom, and bamboo among other ingredients),
chenpi suya (orange peel "duck"), and
xianggu caibao (vegetable steamed buns). For cheaper and more casual dining on the first floor, try the vegetarian spring rolls (
chunjuan) and the award-winning
xianggu mianjin mian (noodle soup with gluten and mushrooms), though you may want to ask for
shao you ("less oil").
