Unlike most hot pot restaurants, which are packed, chaotic, and decor-free, Lai Fu Lou offers some of the most elegant hot pot dining in town. Decor is sleek with soft gray chairs and dark brown wooden tables spaced far apart, affording diners some welcome privacy. Your biggest decision will be to pick your soup base: There's a wide variety here to choose from, including a special chicken soup stock, fish, or pig bone soup. Many folks opt for the
yuanyang version, which contains both a potent spicy stock and a more benign pork-based broth. Besides all the usual meat and vegetable ingredients, the restaurant also specializes in handmade
yuwan (fish balls) and
danjiao (egg-wrapped dumplings).
