A meal within Hirsch's rustic, wood-paneled interior provides a welcome change from a constant diet of Sicilian food. Except for the dusty sun-baked pavement outside and the palms and oleanders that line the street, you might imagine you're in Salzburg, thanks to the dark paneling, wrought iron, and gemütlich sense of kitsch that permeates the place. You'll find many of the time-tested Teutonic specialties here, including sauerbraten and Wiener schnitzel, as well as more exotic fare such as ostrich steaks and barbecued beef. And where else in Palermo can you order a fat roast goose? All of it tastes wonderful when accompanied by foaming steins of beer from the tap. Expect a table full of homesick Germans to be seated next to you.
