Most of the business within this cozy and very local restaurant transpires on the big concrete patio in front, where battered chairs and a large bar seem to satisfy the alcohol-fueled chill-out cravings of much of the downtown area's commercial zone. Don't expect a street number here, as there aren't any: You'll find the place because of its location immediately adjacent to the
Panache Gift Shop (tel.
869/469-7382), a purveyor of cut glass and crystal from Eastern Europe, that's under the same management. And if you want, you can migrate into this restaurant's concrete-block interior, where white walls, white curtains, and photos and paintings of Caribbean landscapes add tropical touches. Anglo-Jamaican owner Peter James and his St-Kitts-born wife, Jean, are the owners of this place, dispensing a mixture of Anglo-Caribbean food that includes homemade soups (vegetable, mutton, or fish soups are usually on the menu); hot and spicy chicken; stewed Creole-style chicken (in a tomato, pepper, and onion base); and escovitch (seafood) of the day made from "potfish," which in this case means whatever fresh fish arrived that morning from local fishermen. You'll be happiest here, frankly, if you don't expect haute designer cuisine, but it's all in good fun, and you'll never know who you'll be likely to meet or the gossip you're likely to hear.
