Many famous actors appearing in Shakespeare plays have made their way here for dinner, including Paul Schofield, Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ralph Richardson, and Sir John Gielgud. You can dine formally in the Elizabethan Room or more casually in the Bistro. A large bar in winter has a fireplace blazing with logs, and it opens into a splendid oak-paneled room. In summer there is a spacious courtyard for alfresco dining. Starters are a harmonious blend of flavors, including terrine of guinea fowl and oyster mushrooms with sherry and a red-onion marmalade. Among the fish dishes, grilled sea bass emerges from the kitchen with roasted fennel and a tomato fondue, or else you can opt for one of the chargrilled dishes such as a filet steak with pan-fried mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. Drunken duck has been a longtime specialty here. It's marinated in gin, red wine, and juniper berries before it's roasted in the oven.
