Khao-San-Road-Area
Bangkok
Khao San Road Area -- Not an official market, the nighttime stalls on Khao San Road cater to young travelers and, as such, this is where you'll find the funkiest do-dads and trinkets in town. From hip-hop fashions and cool T-shirts, to small original artworks, souvenirs and lots of pirate CD and DVD stalls (you didn't hear it from me), you'll find it all on Khao San (and much the same stuff as in other markets in Thailand at good prices). It's worth the trip for the atmosphere alone, bass-thumping clubs, busy bars and Internet shops and all the tattooed, pierced and idealistic young travelers going or coming from all corners of Asia. The area just north of Khao San is a maze of small department stores, shops and very affordable retail goods, from clothes to furniture to food.Khao San Road Area -- Not an official market, the

Patpong-Night-Market
Bangkok
The Patpong area is famous for its bars, neon lights, girls, sex shows, girls, massage parlors, but in recent years has spawned a bustling Night Market along the central streets (hemmed-in on all sides by go-go bars and sex show clubs). This popular Night Market has lots of faux brands: pirated CDs and tapes, designer knockoffs, copy watches (including \"Rolexes\" that should last for at least a few weeks), leather goods stamped with desirable logos (sure to hold up better than cardboard) -- not especially cheap, but lively and fun, especially if you enjoy crowds and the challenge of con artists. Open daily after sundown. The Patpong area is famous for its bars, neon lights,

Suan-Lum-Night-Market
Bangkok
Bangkok's newest night market is just east of Lumpini park, not too far from Silom Road. The new subway will mean easier access here. Suan Lum has many of the same Thai trinkets and souvenirs you'll find in other of Bangkok's markets, but here under covered walkways and with a few bars, restaurants and a huge covered food court with live bands nightly. Well worth a wander.Bangkok's newest night market is just east of Lumpini park,

Weekend-Market-Chatuchak-
Bangkok
If you're in Bangkok on a weekend, don't miss the Weekend Market adjacent to the Mo Chit BTS stop at the northern terminus of the skytrain. Chatuchak covers a vast area with rows of stalls selling everything -- souvenirs, \"antiques,\" fresh and dried seafood, vegetables and condiments, blue and white pottery, pets of every sort (from guppies to Rotweilers), orchids and other exotic plants, clothing, and a host of strange exotic items on top of the usual array of T-shirts, trinkets and souvenirs. It's a great way to introduce yourself to the exotic sights, flavors, and colors of Thai life. It's a great way to get all of those souvenirs you didn't buy yet. The market looks like chaos, but there is some organization going on with similar shops forming small clusters (Nancy Chandler's illustrated Market Map has a color-coded insert) but it's a fun place to get lost (and you will). Open on Saturdays and Sundays. Try to get there early in the morning before the heat. Hint: Hop off the skytrain at Saphan Kwai and walk the one stop to the main market area, staying on the left (or west) side of the train. All along here you'll find some great antique and jewelry stalls. If you're in Bangkok on a weekend, don't miss the
