Diptyque
Boston
I'm not a candle person, but even I admire the subtly fragrant offerings at this Parisian outpost. The shop carries other scented products, such as soaps and room sprays, and other brands, but if you're looking for a hostess gift with off-the-charts snob appeal, you can't go wrong with a Diptyque candle.I'm not a candle person, but even I admire the

"Eco-conscious" doesn't have to mean "lumpy sweatshirt and shapeless jeans," and the stylish merchandise here proves it. Faneuil Hall Marketplace
Boston
The original festival market hall is both wildly popular and widely imitated, and Faneuil Hall Marketplace changes constantly to appeal to visitors as well as locals wary of its touristy reputation. The original part of
Faneuil Hall itself dates to 1742, and the lower floors preserve the building's retail roots. The
Quincy Market Colonnade, in the central building, houses a gargantuan selection of food and confections. The bars and restaurants always seem to be crowded, and the shopping is terrific, if generic. In and around the five buildings, the shops combine "only in Boston" with "only at every mall in the country."
Marketplace Center and the ground floors of the
North Market and
South Market buildings have lots of chain outlets. Most of the unique offerings are under the Quincy Market canopies, where crafts and gifts spill off dozens of
pushcarts, and upstairs and downstairs in the market buildings. Shop hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 9pm and Sunday from noon to 6pm. The Colonnade opens earlier, and most bars and restaurants close later. If you must drive, many businesses offer a discount at the 75 State St. Garage; there's also parking in the Government Center garage off Congress Street and the marketplace's crowded garage off Atlantic Avenue. The original festival market hall is both wildly popular and
Filene's Basement
Boston
New England's most famous discount retailer opened at Downtown Crossing in 1908 (it's now a subsidiary of a Midwestern chain). At press time, that location, the only one where the celebrated automatic-markdown pricing policy applies, was closed for construction and not expected to reopen until 2009. The Back Bay store is many things the original isn't (well lit and scrubbed clean, just to name two), but I find the merchandise roughly equivalent to the stock at other branches. Still, in this neighborhood, any store that acknowledges the concept of discounts is definitely worth a look.New England's most famous discount retailer opened at Downtown Crossing

High Gear Jewelry
Boston
The biggest jewelry snob I know makes up excuses to visit the North End just so she can stop in here. This eye-catching shop right on the Freedom Trail carries an impressive selection of reasonably priced costume jewelry, watches, and hair accessories. If you don't see what you want, ask the friendly staff for help -- the owner recently turned a pair of pierced earrings into clip-ons for my sister in a matter of seconds, for no extra charge. The biggest jewelry snob I know makes up excuses to

Yes, posters are art -- as you'll see before you even cross the threshold of this extraordinary gallery. It features extensive collections of French, Swiss, Soviet, and Italian vintage posters, and thousands of other posters, including originals from around the world. The accommodating staff will comb its databases (cyber and cerebral) to help you find the exact image you want, and the website is a great resource.
