Uncle Fun
Chicago
Whenever I'm looking for a quirky Christmas stocking-stuffer or the perfect gag gift, I know Uncle Fun will come through for me (1950s-era toy robots for a sci-fi-geek friend? Check. And how about some 3-D Jesus postcards for a Catholic-school grad?) Bins and cubbyholes are stuffed full of the standard joke toys (rubber-chicken key chains and chattering wind-up teeth), but you'll also find every conceivable modern pop-culture artifact, from Jackson Five buttons to Speed Racer's Mach-Five model car.Whenever I'm looking for a quirky Christmas stocking-stuffer or the

Urban Oasis
Chicago
After a long day of sightseeing, try a soothing massage in this spa's subdued, Zen-like atmosphere. The ritual begins with a steam or rain shower in a private changing room followed by the spa treatment you elect -- various forms of massage (including a couples' massage, in which you learn to do it yourself), an aromatherapy wrap, or an exfoliating treatment. Fruit, juices, or herbal teas are offered on completion. There's also another location in a burgeoning retail district a few blocks south of the Armitage Avenue shopping strip at 939 W. North Ave. (tel. 773/640-0001).After a long day of sightseeing, try a soothing massage

Vosges Haut-Chocolat
Chicago
Chocolatier Katrina Markoff's exotic gourmet truffles -- with fabulous names such as absinthe, mint julep, wink of the rabbit, woolloomooloo, and ambrosia -- are made from premium Belgian chocolate and infused with rare spices, seasonings, and flowers from around the world. The store -- which looks more like a modern art gallery than a chocolatier -- includes a gourmet hot-chocolate bar, where you're welcome to sit and sip. Vosges also has a small store on trendy Armitage Avenue (951 W. Armitage Ave.; tel. 773/296-9866).Chocolatier Katrina Markoff's exotic gourmet truffles -- with fabulous names

Water Tower Place
Chicago
Water Tower was the first big indoor mall to open downtown (in 1975), and 30 years ago its glass elevators and shiny gold trim gave the place a glamorous air. These days the mall remains popular but doesn't have much to distinguish it from any other upscale shopping center. Water Tower is a magnet for suburban teenagers (just like your mall back home) and can get quite crowded during prime summer tourist season. Most of its stores are part of national chains (Ann Taylor, Victoria's Secret, and so on). The mall is anchored on one end by the Mag Mile outpost of Macy's and on the other by American Girl Place. One of Water Tower's best features is its funky food court, foodlife.Water Tower was the first big indoor mall to open

Women & Children First
Chicago
This feminist and children's bookstore holds the best selection in the city of titles for, by, and about women. But the shop is far from a male-free zone; the owners promote great independent fiction -- by authors of both genders -- making this a good place to discover books that have been overlooked by the bestseller lists. There's a section devoted to lesbian and gay books, and the store has a busy schedule of author appearances. This feminist and children's bookstore holds the best selection in

Zolla/Lieberman Gallery
Chicago
Bob Zolla and Roberta Lieberman kicked off the River North revival when they opened their gallery (considered the grande dame of the area) here in 1976. Today, Zolla/Lieberman, directed by Roberta's son William Lieberman, represents a wide range of artists, including sculptor Deborah Butterfield, installation artist Vernon Fisher, and painter Terence LaNoue.Bob Zolla and Roberta Lieberman kicked off the River North
