Gift items made by Volcano artists are also sold here, but it's the quilts and quilting materials that distinguish the shop. Starter kits are available for beginners. Waikele Premium Outlets
Waikele
Just say the word Waikele and my eyes glaze over. So many shops, so little time! There are two sections to this sprawling discount shopping mecca: the Waikele Premium Outlets, some 51 retailers offering designer and name-brand merchandise; and the Waikele Value Center across the street, with another 25 stores more practical than fashion-oriented (Eagle Hardware, Sports Authority). The 64-acre complex has made discount shopping a travel pursuit in itself, with tours for visitor groups and carloads of neighbor islanders and Oahu residents making pilgrimages from all corners of the state. They come to hunt down bargains on everything from perfumes, luggage, and hardware to sporting goods, fashions, vitamins, and china. Examples: Geoffrey Beene, Donna Karan, Saks Fifth Avenue, Anne Klein, Mikasa, Kenneth Cole, Banana Republic, and the ultra-chic Barneys. Monday through Friday 9am to 9pm, Sunday 10am to 6pm.Just say the word Waikele and my eyes glaze over.

Bailey House Gift Shop
Wailuku
For made-in-Hawaii items, Bailey House is a must-stop. It offers a thoroughly enjoyable browse through authoritative Hawaiiana, in a museum that's one of the finest examples of missionary architecture, dating from 1833. Gracious gardens, rare paintings of early Maui, wonderful programs in Hawaiian arts and culture, and a restored hand-hewn koa canoe await visitors. The shop, a small space of discriminating taste, packs a wallop with its selection of remarkable gift items, from Hawaiian music to exquisite woods, traditional Hawaiian games to pareu and books. Prints by the legendary Hawaii artist Madge Tennent, lauhala hats, hand-sewn pheasant hatbands, jams and jellies, Maui cookbooks, and an occasional Hawaiian quilt are some of the treasures to be found here. For made-in-Hawaii items, Bailey House is a must-stop. Bird of Paradise Unique Antiques
Wailuku
Owner Joe Myhand loves furniture, old Matson liner menus, blue willow china, kimonos for children, and anything nostalgic that happens to be Hawaiian. The furniture ranges from 1940s rattan to wicker and old koa -- those items tailor-made for informal Island living and leisurely moments on the lanai. Myhand also collects bottles and mails his license plates all over the world. The collection ebbs and flows with his finds, keeping buyers waiting in the wings for his Depression glass, California pottery from the 1930s and 1940s, old dinnerware, perfume bottles, vintage aloha shirts, and vintage Hawaiian music on cassettes.Owner Joe Myhand loves furniture, old Matson liner menus, blue

Brown-Kobayashi
Wailuku
Graceful living is the theme here. Prices range from a few dollars to the thousands in this 750-square-foot treasure trove. The owners have added a fabulous selection of antique stone garden pieces that mingle quietly with Asian antiques and old and new French, European, and Hawaiian objects. Although the collection is eclectic, there is a strong cohesive aesthetic that sets Brown-Kobayashi apart from other Maui antiques stores. Japanese kimonos and obi, Bakelite and Peking glass beads, breathtaking Japanese lacquerware, cricket carriers, and cloisonné are among the delights here. Exotic and precious Chinese woods (purple sandalwood and huanghuali) glow discreetly from quiet corners, and an occasional monarchy-style lidded milo bowl comes in and flies out.Graceful living is the theme here. Gottling Ltd
Wailuku
Karl Gottling's shop specializes in Asian antique furniture, but you can also find smaller carvings, precious stones, jewelry, netsuke, opium weights, and more. I saw a 17th-century Buddha lending an air of serenity next to a 150-year-old Chinese cabinet. Ming Dynasty ceramics, carved wooden apples ($15), and a Persian rug ($65,000) give you an idea of the range of possibilities here.Karl Gottling's shop specializes in Asian antique furniture, but you

You'll find jewelry, glassware, photographs, greeting cards, fiber baskets, and hand-turned bowls of beautifully grained woods. Photos by Victoria McCormick, the sketches of Kathy Long, feather masks by Beth McCormick, and the paintings of Yvonne Cheng are among the treasures by local artists. Mauna Kea Galleries
Waimea
This is the new and expanded version of the gallery I've come to know and love in Hilo, which is now open by appointment only. Mark Blackburn, who wrote Hawaiiana: The Best of Hawaiian Design, has made this his showcase for the treasures he loves to collect. He and his wife, Carolyn, amass vintage Hawaiiana in mint condition and then respectfully display it. Their collection includes monarchy and Ming jewelry; mint-condition Santa Anita and Don Blanding dinnerware, including very rare pieces; adz-hewn koa and kou bowls; and vintage photography and menus, all individually stored in plastic sleeves ($10-$300). Rare books and prints, including hand-colored 1870s lithographs; old koa furniture; original Hawaiian fish prints from the early 1900s; and limited-edition, museum-quality reproductions of hula-girl photos from the 1890s are also among the finds. This is the new and expanded version of the gallery
