The-Reading-Room
Las-Vegas
The only bookstore on the Strip, and nicely located at the edge of the Mandalay Place shopping center, right past all the casino mayhem. It's a small shop, but carefully stocked so that it appeals not just to the relaxed needs of a traveler who mostly wants a good poolside read, but with a few more challenging offers tossed in as well. Inside it is a proper bookstore atmosphere, outside there is a nice place or two to sit. Reading a book with a cup of coffee -- how un-Vegas can you be? Open daily from 7am to 11pm.The only bookstore on the Strip, and nicely located at

Zia-Record-Exchange
Las-Vegas
A sign that individual Vegas culture might not be dead after all, this fairly large shop mixes new and used records. The emphasis is on CDs but they do have a big vinyl section, and both show a varied selection of music styles (rock, punk, jazz, soundtracks, and so on). Cleverly, they spotlight bands coming to Vegas, both large and small, with special displays, plus always have bins of music from local acts. On Fridays and Saturdays, live local acts play in the shop. Please note the signs cautioning against slam dancing! Fashion-Outlets-Las-Vegas

Dedicated bargain hunters (we stop here every time we drive by) may want to make the roughly 40-minute drive along I-15 to this big outlet complex, right on the border of California and Nevada. (There's also a shuttle from the MGM Grand or the mall at Planet Hollywood. Round-trip fare is $15 and includes a savings book for discounts at the outlets. Also, check the website for a shuttle discount coupon.) On your left is a large factory outlet with some designer names prominent enough to make the trip worthwhile -- Kenneth Cole, Versace, Coach, Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, even a rare Williams-Sonoma, among several others. Why so far out of town? Our guess is because some of these companies have full-price boutiques in various hotels and malls, and they don't want you ignoring those in favor of discounted items.
