Arthur-Avenue-Retail-Market
Bronx
This colorful, enclosed market opened in the heart of the Bronx's Little Italy in 1940 and is my absolute favorite. The market, like the Bronx, has had its ups and downs but now is thriving. You'll find fresh-produce purveyors like Biano fruits and vegetables and Joe Liberatore's Garden of Plenty, where I buy the best tomato plants for my terrace. There is Peter's Market for homemade sausages and braciole, Mike's Deli for freshly made mozzarella and sandwiches, Café al Mercato for their amazing broccoli rabe pizza and pasta fiogoli, the Arthur Avenue Baking Company for loaves of pane di casa and Parmesan breadsticks, and even La Casa Grande Tobacco Company, where they roll their own cigars. This colorful, enclosed market opened in the heart of the

ABC-Carpet-and-Home
New-York
Shopping ABC has often been compared to taking a fantasy tour of your very rich and very well-traveled ancestor's attic. This two-building emporium is legendary and deserves to be: It's the ultimate home-fashions-and-furnishings department store. On the west side of the street is the stunning 10-floor home emporium. The goods run the gamut from Moroccan mosaic-tile end tables to hand-painted Tuscan pottery to Tiffany-style lamps to distressed bed frames sporting meltingly soft Italian linens to much, much more, all exquisitely displayed. A whole floor of on-the-bolt upholstery fabrics is to die for. These are high-end goods, but sales can produce substantial bargains. The Parlor floor boasts an eclectic collection of beautiful gift items and housewares, and some of the smaller items are quite affordable. Across the street is the multi-floor carpet store, which boasts a stunning collection of area rugs.Shopping ABC has often been compared to taking a fantasy

Allan and Suzi have specialized in gently worn 20th-century designer wear for well over a decade now, and their selection is marvelous. Their extensive vintage and contemporary couture collection -- which ranges from conservative Chanel to over-the-top Halston, Mackie, and Versace -- is so well priced that it's well within reach of the average shopper looking for something extra-glamorous to wear.Make it past the freaky windows and inside you'll find

Barneys-New-York
New-York
After financial woes forced the closure of the original Chelsea store a few years back, New York's self-made temple of chic is back on top. While the store focuses on hot-off-the-runway women's wear, its menswear runs the gamut from classic to cutting edge. The fragrance department works hard to offer offbeat and unusual scents as well as the classics. Bring your platinum card, because nothing comes cheap here, although house brands are solidly made and aren't off-the-chart expensive. Both the downtown (in two locations) and uptown Barneys Co-Ops have blossomed into real fashion hot spots, sisterly but separate from the chic Barneys New York Madison Avenue headquarters. At Barneys Co-Op, more downtown-casual fashions for men and women -- from such designer names as Diane von Furstenberg, Juicy Couture, and Rebecca Taylor -- set the tone. Prices are more reasonable than at the flagship but not cheap by any means. Tip: Twice a year, Barneys hosts its famous warehouse sale in Chelsea. Prices are changed daily, but markdowns are 50% to 80% off the original retail prices on all clothing and gifts. So if you are planning a shopping trip to the city, keep your eyes open for when the sales will occur. After financial woes forced the closure of the original Chelsea

Dealing strictly in highly prized volumes with topics ranging from philosophy and science to children's classics, Bauman is one of the foremost resources for serious collectors willing to spend big money for pristine first editions, ranging from Milton's Paradise Lost (1669) to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), signed by the author.Dealing strictly in highly prized volumes with topics ranging from

Bergdorf-Goodman
New-York
Bergdorf's is a sybarite's delight. The store is designed on an intimate scale and lacks the kicky nouveau-riche feel of Bendel's. Although the customer base is primarily composed of ladies who lunch and businesswomen with gobs of money but little time for nonsense, fashionistas in the know appreciate Bergdorf's little secret: Sales can garner fantastic bargains, with designer-clothing prices slashed to the bone. Finely tuned designer salons represent both couture powerhouses and downtown darlings. The fifth floor is an open space filled with fashions at more reasonable prices. The jewelry on the main floor and unparalleled gift and tabletop floor are worth a browse alone. The store has two ladies'-shoe departments, one tops for one-stop designer shopping in the $300-and-up range, and the less-expensive fifth-floor salon. Just across the street is Bergdorf Goodman Man, a palace of fine men's fashion.Bergdorf's is a sybarite's delight. The store is designed on

Bloomingdales
New-York
More accessible than Barneys and more affordable than Saks, Bloomingdale's has a certain New York pizazz. Taking up a whole city block, Bloomie's stocks just about anything you could want, from clothing (both designer and everyday basics) and fragrances to housewares and furniture -- not necessarily a good thing, because sometimes it feels too stuffed full of merchandise for comfort. It pays to make a reconnaissance trip to get the overview, then move in for the kill. The main entrance is on Third Avenue, but pop up to street level from the 59th Street station and you'll be right at the Lexington Avenue entrance. A smaller, downtown branch opened in 2004 offering pricier and edgier items.More accessible than Barneys and more affordable than Saks, Bloomingdale's
