Eastern Market
Washington, D.C.
A devastating fire in April 2007 gutted this Capitol Hill institution, a market that had been in continuous operation since 1873. But some vendors are operating across the street in a new, but temporary, building. Meanwhile, renovation continues on the historic market building, which is slated to reopen in late 2008 or early 2009, thanks to an intense effort by the surrounding community and the D.C. government, led by D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, to rebuild this essential and beloved neighborhood emporium. In fact, the outdoor farmers market stalls have remained open throughout, selling fresh produce and other goods on Saturdays and flea market items on Sundays. If Eastern Market's South Hall has been restored, you can expect to see an inside bazaar Tuesday through Sunday, where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, farmers, artists, craftspeople, florists, and other merchants sell their wares. And if all is well, Saturday morning will once again be the best time to go to experience a D.C. tradition: blueberry pancakes at the Market Lunch counter.
