For about a century, well-heeled Swiss have come here for access to upscale table and bed linens, some of it richly embroidered in places including Sankt Gallen and Appenzell. The venue is plush and the merchandise includes the kind of densely woven high-end consumer goods that evoke the haute bourgeoisie of central Europe even after the goods have been unwrapped, used repeatedly, and laundered. For about a century, well-heeled Swiss have come here for

Distillerie-zur-Schnapsboutique
Zurich
The light within this small and aromatic shop seems to shimmer in tones of honey and amber, thanks to the oversized, balloon-shaped glass decanters which nestle side by side within specially designed wooden racks. Each is filled to the brim with various vintages of schnapps from local distillers, sherry from selected bodegas throughout Spain, and rare plum wines from Japan. A staff member will advise you of what you're seeing (and smelling) here, but if you think you can plunk down some money and walk out with a bottle, think again, since it gets more complicated than that. Before your liqueur of choice is decanted, you'll have to select, and pay for, a container. These range from the utilitarian and relatively ordinary -- a glorified milk bottle with a cap, for example, for 2.90F ($2.40/£1.20) -- to high-tech, labor-intensive crystal decanters priced at around 180F ($148/£77) each. The contents of your decanter, depending on the vintage and its age, begin at around 30F ($25/£13) and can go up to ten times that amount. This is liquor as it was sold several generations ago, within a venue that we were told is now unique within SwitzerlandThe light within this small and aromatic shop seems to

Freitag-Shop-Zurich
Zurich
Set within a drab and shadowy neighborhood of Zurich West, and flanked with roaring traffic ramps and overpasses, this shop achieved fame and notoriety throughout Switzerland, thanks to a physical plant that's composed of 17 seagoing containers piled to a height of 85 feet. In Zurich, it ranks as a tall building. Inside, you'll find the entire line of backpacks, wallets, bike saddlebags, dopp kits, wallets, and duffel bags for which Freitag, within counter-culture fashion accessories for the young and the restless, is famous. Many of the goods sold here are crafted from colorful scraps of canvas, and some have been singled out by Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art for the integrity and originality of their designs.Set within a drab and shadowy neighborhood of Zurich West,

Zurich
This is one of the best department stores in Switzerland, offering both ready-to-wear and couture by such designers as Valentino, Dior, Escada, and Montana. Landoumlwenbrandaumlu
Zurich
We (along with most of our readers) realize that Löwenbräu is the name of a widely sought after brand of beer, but when it comes to art and art galleries within the rapidly-emerging neighborhood of Zurich West, it takes on another meaning completely. Massively built of red brick around 1900 as a brewery by the you-know-who company, its fortress-like interior was radically transformed a few years ago into one of the biggest art exhibition spaces in town -- an ugly, industrial-looking mixed-use showplace for both publicly funded museums and privately owned art galleries where artworks are for sale. Of the six or seven private art galleries inside, one of the most impressive is Daros Exhibitions (tel. 044/447-70-00), whose works are about as cutting-edge as they come. Also on-site, and funded by a chain of local grocery stores, is the Migros Museum for Contemporary Art (tel. 044/277-20-50). The best way to decipher the various venues within this place involves tramping through its maze of labyrinthine corridors and stairwells. Tip: Avoid the place on Monday, when virtually everything inside this sprawling place is closed. We (along with most of our readers) realize that Löwenbräu
