One of Grand Cayman's most eccentric coral-jewelry designers operates a showroom from what was originally built as a garage on South Strand Road, in a mostly residential neighborhood about 4.8km (3 miles) south of George Town. Its owner is Carey Hurleston ("Doctor Carey," to his friends), a heavily tattooed, widely experienced biker who might drop an anecdote or two about his days with some of North America's more notorious motorcycle clubs. As Hurleston says, "I'm like country music. I'm here to stay." All the coral sold here comes from waters immediately off Grand Cayman. Hurleston removed the coral from deep waters some 2 decades ago, before the reef was protected, and his products are made from that long-ago supply. It's all fashioned into earrings, pendants, and bracelets, with very few items selling for more than CI$50 (US$63/£30).
